GARDEN BED installation

Before Photos

The goal for this project was to rehabilitate an existing beach rose and herb bed and install two new beds below the house, where an outdoor shower had recently been built. We began by removing the roses and weeding the existing bed. Between visits to the property, I sourced the perennials and shrubs from two different plant nurseries. I then transported them to the Block Island Ferry, loading them onto pallets and into crates for shipment to the island.

In the top bed, we planted Limelight Hydrangeas alongside a mix of deer-resistant, summer-blooming perennials and a selection of herbs for a small kitchen garden. We focused on full-sun perennials that would bloom throughout the summer, keeping in mind that many clients on Block Island visit primarily from May to early September. For the lower-level beds, we planted Vitex, Nepeta, Buddleia, and Russian Sage. These perennials were chosen for their ability to withstand the dry, sandy soil and strong winds common on the island.
