Following the construction of a home addition, this project focused on transforming a newly renovated backyard into a tranquil outdoor retreat centered around a custom koi pond and patio. The landscape was designed to soften the new hardscape while establishing a healthy, resilient ecosystem that will continue to mature over time.
A primary objective of the design was to increase the property’s ecological value by incorporating a diverse palette of native plants that provide food and habitat for pollinators and wildlife. Plant selections were carefully matched to the site’s varying conditions, including heavy clay soils with high moisture retention surrounding the pond and slightly drier conditions along the adjacent pathway. Moisture-loving species such as cardinal flower, Japanese iris, and aquatic water lilies were integrated into the pond, marginal plants were added on the pond’s hillside, and drought-tolerant plants like lavender and catmint were used in the better-drained planting areas to create contrast in texture, color, and seasonal interest.
During installation, the original design evolved to take advantage of the site’s natural focal points. Rather than placing the Japanese maple at the crest of the hillside as initially planned, it was repositioned behind the waterfall where its graceful form draws the eye toward the cascading water and serves as the garden’s visual centerpiece.
Because the project was completed in phases, the initial installation establishes the landscape’s structure while leaving room for future expansion as the garden matures. Over time, additional native perennials, ornamental accents, and spring-flowering bulbs can be introduced, allowing the landscape to evolve naturally while remaining sensitive to the client’s budget and long-term vision.
